SCADA Design for Remote Diesel Power Stations

Remote diesel power stations need SCADA that helps operators and service teams understand plant condition quickly, especially before someone travels to site.

SCADA for a remote generator site should not be a wall of tags. It should tell operators what is running, what is available, what has changed, what has alarmed and what action is likely required. For service teams, it should preserve enough history to support diagnosis.

Useful SCADA views

  • Plant overview showing generator state, bus status and site load
  • Generator detail screens for engine, alternator, controller and breaker data
  • Alarm summary with clear source, priority, time and operator status
  • Trends for load, fuel, voltage, current, frequency, runtime and temperatures
  • Maintenance and support screens with backups, settings and configuration references

The strongest SCADA systems are built around operator decisions. For example, if a generator is unavailable, the screen should help explain whether that is due to a trip, maintenance lockout, communications issue, controller state or electrical permissive.

Remote support considerations

Remote monitoring needs practical alarm filtering, reliable communications, useful event history and clear naming. Too many nuisance alarms can train people to ignore the system. Too little context can leave support teams guessing.

SCADA should reduce mobilisation uncertainty. A technician should be able to review the plant state before arriving and bring the right tools, spares and documentation.
