Can an old drive be replaced with a different brand?

Often yes, but IO, parameters, communications, dimensions, cooling and control logic need to be checked carefully.

Can a VFD be added to an existing motor?

Sometimes. Motor insulation, cooling, cable length, load type and speed range should be reviewed first.
